Japan to Russian Federation visa requirements

This is the simplest official route for short tourism, private visits, business visits, and participation in eligible cultural, scientific, economic, sporting, and similar events. The e-visa is applied for online through the Russian MFA Consular Department portal or mobile app, may be submitted no earlier than 86 days and no later than 4 days before expected entry, and requires a machine-readable passport valid at least 6 months from the application date, a scan/photo of the passport data page, and a recent digital face photo. No invitation letter, hotel booking confirmation, or other proof of travel purpose is required for the e-visa application. For work, study, residence, longer stays, multiple entries, or purposes outside the e-visa categories, use a regular Russian visa. Japan's MOFA continues to advise against travel to most of Russia and to avoid/evacuate from Ukraine-border areas; it also notes no direct flights between Russia and Japan/Western Europe, limits on international transfers, and international credit-card restrictions. Russia is not part of the Schengen Area, so Schengen 90/180 rules and ETIAS do not apply to entering Russia.
