Japan to Papua New Guinea visa requirements

Japanese ordinary passport holders can get a Visa on Arrival in Papua New Guinea (reinstated for Japan in September 2025) for a 60-day tourist stay, or apply online for the PNG eVisa (Visitor Visa) at USD 50 before travel. A pre-approved eVisa is the more reliable route. Papua New Guinea is not a visa-free destination and is not part of the Schengen area. All visitors need an entry permit. For Japanese ordinary passport holders there are now two short-stay tourist channels. PNG reintroduced Visa on Arrival (VOA) on a reciprocal basis, and Japan was specifically added in September 2025, allowing a 60-day single-entry visitor stay obtained at major international airports (Port Moresby Jacksons and Tokua/Rabaul). Separately, PNG operates an online eVisa (Visitor Visa, sometimes branded Easy Visitor Permit) via the official ICA portal at evisa.ica.gov.pg, costing USD 50 for a single entry and a 60-day stay. Because VOA capacity and conditions can change and counters can be slow, securing an eVisa before departure is the recommended, lower-risk option. Since 1 October 2025 all travelers must also complete the PNG Digital Arrival Card. Passports must be valid at least 6 months and travelers should carry proof of onward travel and accommodation. Note: the PNG Embassy in Tokyo page was last updated in 2023 and still reflects the older COVID-era VOA suspension, so the embassy and ICA sources should be cross-checked against the latest ICA guidance.
