Do Japan passport holders need a visa to visit NO?
Japanese ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for short tourist visits to Norway. They may stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area, including Norway, visa-free. Norway is part of the Schengen Area, and Japan has a visa-exemption arrangement with the Schengen states. As of 30 May 2026, Japanese ordinary passport holders can enter Norway for tourism, business, or family visits without a visa for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. No advance application or fee is required today; travelers simply present a valid passport (issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond the intended departure) at the border. Note that the EU's ETIAS travel authorization is expected to become mandatory for visa-exempt travelers (including Japanese nationals) in the last quarter of 2026, at a fee of EUR 20. Until ETIAS goes live, no authorization is needed. The Entry/Exit System (EES) biometric registration is also being rolled out at Schengen external borders. Work and study are not permitted on visa-free entry.
