Japan to Mozambique visa requirements

Japanese ordinary passport holders are visa-exempt for tourist stays of up to 30 days in Mozambique, but since the 11 February 2026 portal relaunch, a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) must be obtained online before boarding. Apply at the official evisa.gov.mz portal at least 48 hours (ideally 3-5 business days) before departure; the government ETA fee is approximately USD 48. Under Mozambican Decree 10/2023, Japan is one of 29 nationalities exempt from a tourist/business visa for stays up to 30 days, with multiple entries permitted within that period and a possible 30-day extension. However, Mozambique has converted the previous voluntary pre-registration into a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for these visa-exempt nationals. On 11 February 2026 the country relaunched its e-Visa/ETA platform with VFS Global at evisa.gov.mz, and the government ETA fee rose to roughly USD 48 (from about USD 10). Airlines verify ETA approval at check-in and can deny boarding without it, so the ETA is the practical, mandatory action for a Japanese tourist. During the transition some carriers may still board travelers who pay the entry fee on arrival, but authorities strongly recommend securing the ETA in advance. Travelers must hold a passport valid at least 6 months, proof of accommodation, an onward/return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds. Verdict is "eta": the trip is visa-free in legal category but requires an approved ETA before travel.
