Japan to Mauritania visa requirements

Japanese passport holders need a visa for Mauritania. Since 5 January 2025, the standard route is the official eVisa (electronic pre-authorization): you complete the online application before boarding and pay the fee on arrival. Visa on arrival without prior online registration is no longer the normal channel. A Japan ordinary passport is NOT visa-exempt for Mauritania (only a handful of African neighbors enjoy visa-free access, plus diplomatic/service passport holders of certain countries). As of 5 January 2025, Mauritania operates an eVisa system run by the Agence Nationale du Registre des Populations et des Titres Sécurisés (ANRPTS). Visa-required nationals, including Japanese citizens, must complete the online application and obtain the electronic confirmation BEFORE boarding their flight; the confirmation is presented at check-in and at immigration, where the fee is paid (cash in EUR or USD). Mauritanian embassies have stopped issuing visas and now redirect applicants to the online portal. The most common tourist option is a single-entry, 30-day eVisa costing 55 EUR / 60 USD, with 90-day and 360-day options also offered. Passport must be valid at least 6 months on entry with one blank page. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. Mauritania is in West/North-West Africa and is NOT part of the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 and ETIAS rules do not apply.
