Japan to Iraq visa requirements

Japanese passport holders need an e-visa to visit Federal Iraq for tourism. Since 1 March 2025, Iraq suspended visa-on-arrival for 37 nationalities (Japan included) and made the online e-visa at evisa.iq mandatory before travel. A Japanese ordinary passport holder cannot enter Federal Iraq visa-free or get a visa on arrival for tourism as of 2026. On 1 March 2025 Iraq's Ministry of Interior suspended the visa-on-arrival facility for 37 countries, including Japan, and now requires an electronic visa obtained in advance through the official portal evisa.iq. The federal tourist e-visa is a single-entry document, typically valid for entry within 60 days and allowing a stay of around 30 days, with a combined visa-plus-mandatory-health-insurance cost of roughly 206,000 IQD (about USD 158-160). Processing is usually 1-7 days (often 24-72 hours). The autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah) operates a separate visa system under which Japanese nationals can still obtain a visa on arrival or a cheaper Kurdistan e-visa (around USD 75) via visit.gov.krd, but a Kurdistan permit alone does not authorize travel into Federal Iraq. Travelers visiting both should hold the federal e-visa. Iraq is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. Given the suspension of VOA and the mandatory advance e-visa, the correct verdict for a short tourist stay is e-visa. Apply only through the official government portal and beware of third-party reseller sites that charge inflated fees.
