Do Japan passport holders need a visa to visit Finland?
Japanese ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit Finland for tourism. They may enter visa-free and stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Finland is a member of the Schengen Area, and Japan is on the EU's visa-exempt list. As of 2026-05-30, holders of an ordinary Japanese passport can travel to Finland for tourism, business, family visits or similar short stays without a visa, for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone. No advance authorization is currently required: the EU's ETIAS travel authorization is confirmed to launch in the last quarter of 2026 with a transitional/grace period, so it is NOT yet mandatory at this date. The passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area. Travelers should be ready to show proof of onward/return travel, accommodation and sufficient funds at the border. Once ETIAS goes live (expected Q4 2026), Japanese citizens will need to obtain it online (EUR 20, valid 3 years) before departure, but it remains a visa waiver, not a visa.
