Do Japan passport holders need a visa to visit CH?
Japanese ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for short tourist stays in Switzerland. As part of the Schengen Area, Switzerland allows visa-free entry for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS is not yet required (expected late 2026). Switzerland is a Schengen member state, and Japan holds a visa-waiver agreement covering the entire Schengen Area. A Japanese ordinary passport holder can travel to Switzerland for tourism, business, family visits, and similar short-term purposes without a visa, staying up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen zone. The passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date and issued within the previous 10 years. No visa application or fee is involved for short stays. Looking ahead, the EU's ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2026, after which visa-exempt nationals including Japanese citizens will need a pre-travel ETIAS authorisation (a EUR 7 online travel authorisation, with a transitional grace period). As of 2026-05-30 ETIAS is NOT yet mandatory, so travel remains fully visa-free with no online authorisation required.
