Do Japan passport holders need a visa to visit Canada?
Canadian eTA required (CAD 7). Visa-free entry up to 6 months at port of entry discretion. Japanese ordinary passport holders are visa-waiver eligible for Canada and enter visa-free for up to 6 months per visit (at the CBSA officer's discretion at port of entry), but must hold a valid Canadian eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before boarding any flight to Canada. The eTA costs CAD 7, is electronically linked to the passport, and is valid for up to 5 years or until the passport expires (whichever comes first). The application is fully online at the official IRCC website, typically approved in minutes. Note that eTA is required only for air travel into Canada — entry by land or sea from the US (rare for Japanese travellers) does not require an eTA. The 6-month visitor visa stamp is decided by CBSA at the airport, not at the eTA application. For longer stays, work, or study a paper visa is required.

For guidance only — visa rules change with little notice. Always confirm directly with the destination's embassy or foreign ministry before booking non-refundable travel. Information here applies to ordinary (non-diplomatic) passports unless noted.
