Do Japan passport holders need a visa to visit AT?
No visa required. Japanese ordinary passport holders can enter Austria visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen short-stay rule. As of 30 May 2026, Japanese ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for short tourist visits to Austria. Austria is part of the Schengen Area, and Japan is on the Schengen visa-exemption list, so travelers may enter visa-free and stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone. A long-standing 1958 bilateral agreement also permits Japanese citizens an additional stay in Austria specifically beyond the Schengen 90 days, but for ordinary tourism the 90/180 rule is what applies. No advance authorization is required today. The EU's ETIAS travel authorization (a quick, low-cost online pre-registration, NOT a visa) is scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2026; once live, Japanese nationals will need a valid ETIAS before boarding. Separately, the Entry/Exit System (EES) began operating on 12 October 2025, replacing manual passport stamps with biometric registration at the border. Travelers should carry a passport valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date, proof of onward/return travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds.
