🇮🇹Italy🏳New CaledoniaIT-NC Italy to New Caledonia visa requirements
Italian citizens do NOT need a visa to visit New Caledonia. As EU nationals, they enjoy freedom of movement to this French overseas collectivity and may enter and stay without any visa, eVisa, or ETIAS authorisation. A valid passport or national identity card is sufficient. New Caledonia (Nouvelle-Caledonie) is a French overseas sui generis collectivity in the South Pacific. Because Italy is a member of the European Union, Italian citizens benefit from the EU/EEA right of free movement within French territory and enter New Caledonia completely visa-free, with no maximum-stay limit applied to EU nationals (unlike the 90-day cap that applies to many third-country visa-waived nationals such as Australians, Japanese, Canadians and Americans). Crucially, New Caledonia is NOT part of the Schengen Area: although mainland France is a Schengen state, French overseas territories apply their own entry rules, so a Schengen visa is neither required nor valid for New Caledonia, and the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation does NOT apply here. Italian travellers may present either a valid passport or a valid national identity card. While there is no visa-free stay limit for EU citizens, those wishing to settle, work, or reside long-term must obtain authorisation from local New Caledonian authorities. Border officials may still request proof of onward/return travel, sufficient funds, accommodation and travel insurance. Travel insurance with medical and repatriation cover is strongly recommended (and described as mandatory by the local tourism authority).
