Italy to Malawi visa requirements

Italian passport holders need a visa to visit Malawi. The simplest route is an eVisa applied for online in advance via the official portal at evisa.gov.mw before travelling. Until January 2026, Italy was on Malawi's 48-country visa-free list introduced in February 2024. That waiver was revoked effective 3 January 2026: Malawi now only exempts regional bloc members (SADC/COMESA) and countries that grant Malawians reciprocal visa-free access. Italy is no longer exempt, so Italian tourists must obtain a visa before travel. Malawi operates a fully electronic eVisa system through its Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services (evisa.gov.mw). Italian nationals fall into the category that must secure authorisation in advance rather than rely on visa on arrival, so the recommended channel is the single-entry tourist eVisa, valid for 3 months and used once. Apply online, upload a passport bio-page scan and photo, pay by Visa or Mastercard, and carry the printed approval letter to present at the port of entry. Malawi is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply here.
