Italy to Mauritania visa requirements

Italian passport holders need an eVisa for Mauritania. Since 5 January 2025, visa on arrival has been abolished and the eVisa must be obtained online via the official ANRPTS portal before boarding. The eVisa fee (typically EUR 55 for 30 days) is paid in exact cash on arrival. Italy is an ordinary passport-issuing EU country and is NOT on Mauritania's short visa-exempt list (which covers only a handful of African neighbours such as Algeria, Mali, Senegal, Tunisia, Gambia, Niger, Chad, Libya, Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire). Therefore an Italian tourist requires a visa. Mauritania launched a mandatory electronic visa (eVisa) system in January 2025. As of 5 January 2025, it is no longer possible to obtain a visa on arrival, and as of June 2025 Mauritanian embassies and consulates no longer issue visas directly, redirecting all applicants to the online eVisa platform operated by the National Agency for the Population Register and Secure Titles (ANRPTS) at anrpts.gov.mr. Italian travellers must apply online before boarding their flight, uploading a passport scan and a compliant 480x640 px photo, then print the approved eVisa with QR code. Unusually, the eVisa is approved online but the visa fee is paid in exact cash (Euros or US dollars) on arrival at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport; no change or receipts are given. The standard tourist eVisa is 30 days; 90-day and 360-day options exist. Processing is officially a few business days but in practice has run 1-2 weeks in 2025, so applying at least a month ahead is recommended. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from or transiting a country with yellow fever transmission risk, and the passport must be valid at least 6 months with a blank page. Mauritania is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply.
