Italy to France visa requirements
No visa needed. Italian citizens can visit France under EU freedom of movement with a valid Italian passport or national ID card; ETIAS, EES registration, and the Schengen 90/180 cap do not apply to EU citizens. Italy and France are both European Union and Schengen member states. Italian citizens have the EU right to enter and stay in France with a valid Italian passport or a national identity card valid for travel abroad; no visa, ETIAS authorisation, or pre-travel application is required. Internal Schengen border checks are normally absent between Italy and France, but France or another Schengen state may temporarily reintroduce controls, so travellers should keep their passport or ID card accessible. The Schengen 90/180 short-stay limit applies to non-EU travellers, not Italian EU citizens. For the first three months in France, EU citizens need only hold a valid passport or ID card; stays beyond three months are handled under EU residence rules and may require meeting conditions such as work, study, sufficient resources, and health coverage, rather than applying for a tourist visa. France Diplomatie confirms EES registration and ETIAS are for non-EU/non-Schengen travellers; EU and Schengen nationals are not affected. Practical document note: Italian paper identity cards cease to be valid for travel abroad from 3 August 2026, so travellers relying on an ID card should use the electronic identity card (CIE) or a valid passport.
