Q: Can I enter Finland with just my Italian ID card?

Yes. A valid Italian national identity card (carta d'identita) is accepted for travel to Finland; you do not need a passport.

Q: Do I need ETIAS to visit Finland?

No. ETIAS applies only to visa-exempt non-EU nationals. As an EU citizen you are exempt.

Q: Does the new EES affect me as an Italian traveller?

No. The Entry/Exit System that became fully operational in April 2026 registers non-EU travellers only. EU citizens are not subject to biometric registration.

Q: How long can I stay in Finland?

You can stay as a visitor for up to three months. To remain longer you should register your right of residence with the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri).

Q: Will my passport be stamped or checked?

There are normally no systematic checks on internal Schengen routes, but carry a valid passport or ID card as identity checks can still occur.

No visa needed. As an EU citizen, an Italian passport holder enjoys full freedom of movement and can enter Finland for tourism with just a valid passport or national ID card. Italy and Finland are both members of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Under EU free-movement rights, Italian citizens do not need a visa, an ETIAS authorisation, or any pre-arrival registration to travel to Finland for tourism or short visits. You may enter using either a valid Italian passport or a valid Italian national identity card. There is no fixed 90/180-day limit for EU citizens (that limit applies only to non-EU visa-exempt travellers); EU citizens may stay up to three months simply as visitors, and longer if they register a residence. The new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and the upcoming ETIAS scheme do NOT apply to EU citizens. Internal Schengen border checks are normally absent, but always carry a valid travel document because identity checks can occur. A driving licence, bank card or postal ID is not an accepted travel document.

Check that your Italian passport or national identity card (carta d'identita) is valid on your travel dates. EU citizens are not subject to the three-months-beyond-departure rule that applies to non-EU travellers.

Book travel and accommodation
