Do India passport holders need a visa to visit Portugal (Schengen)?

Indian ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Portugal for tourism. There is no visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or eVisa option, and ETIAS does NOT apply to Indians (it is only for visa-exempt nationals). Portugal is part of the Schengen Area, and India is not on the EU visa-exempt list. An Indian ordinary passport holder must obtain a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa before travelling for tourism. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. Applications are submitted through the VFS Global Portugal Visa Application Centre in India (Delhi, Mumbai, etc.) on behalf of the Portuguese consulate; in-person biometric enrolment (fingerprints and photo) is mandatory unless previously enrolled within the last 59 months. The Schengen visa fee rose to EUR 90 for adults on 11 June 2024, plus a VFS service charge. Standard processing is about 15 calendar days but can extend to 30-45 days in peak season, so apply early (no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 working days before travel). Portugal must be your main destination (longest stay) or first point of entry for it to be the correct consulate. ETIAS, the EU's upcoming travel authorisation expected in the last quarter of 2026, applies only to visa-exempt travellers and therefore does NOT replace the visa requirement for Indian nationals.
