Do India passport holders need a visa to visit AT?

Indian ordinary passport holders need a Schengen Type C short-stay visa to visit Austria for tourism. There is no visa-free entry, no visa-on-arrival, and no eVisa. ETIAS does NOT apply to Indians (it is only for visa-exempt nationals), but the EES biometric border check applies on arrival. Austria is a member of the Schengen Area, so Indian nationals holding an ordinary passport must apply for a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa before traveling for tourism. Applications are lodged through VFS Global on behalf of the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi, which decides all Indian applications. The visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all 29 Schengen countries. The standard visa fee is EUR 90, payable in INR, plus a VFS service charge of around INR 2,479. Standard processing is about 15 working days but can extend to 30-45 days during peak season or when additional checks are required, so apply early (no more than 6 months and at least 15 working days before travel). From 1 January 2026 Austria only accepts travel medical insurance (minimum EUR 30,000 cover) from approved providers - verify the current list on the VFS page before buying. Note two recent EU changes: ETIAS (launching Q4 2026) does NOT apply to Indians because they already require a visa; and the Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational across Schengen since 10 April 2026, registers biometrics (fingerprints and facial image) at the border on first entry.
