Hong Kong (SAR China) to Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) visa requirements

Hong Kong SAR passport holders need a Taiwan entry permit before travel. Eligible HK-born or previously admitted HK permanent residents can use the free online web permit for one 30-day stay; others use the NIA online entry/exit permit route. Hong Kong SAR passport holders are not treated as ordinary visa-free foreign visitors for Taiwan. The usual short tourist route is the National Immigration Agency (NIA) Hong Kong/Macao resident online temporary stay permit, often called the web permit or wangqian. It is available to HK permanent residents who were born in Hong Kong/Macao, previously entered Taiwan as a HK/Macao resident after 1983, or already hold a valid HK/Macao resident Taiwan entry permit. The web permit is free, normally approved online immediately, must be printed and signed, is valid for one entry within 3 months of approval, and allows a stay of 30 days counted from the day after arrival; it is not extendable for ordinary tourism. Travellers who are not eligible for the web permit - for example first-time applicants born outside Hong Kong/Macao, travellers needing more than 30 days, or travellers needing multiple entries - should use the NIA overseas online application system for a paid entry and exit permit. That permit costs NT$600 for single entry, is valid for 6 months from the day after issue, allows one entry, and permits a stay of up to 3 months with one possible extension. TECO Hong Kong warns that Hong Kong applications can take longer than the generic NIA processing standard and recommends applying 1-2 months ahead before booking travel. Passport validity for these HK/Macao resident permit routes is 3 months or more, and travellers should carry the printed permit, Hong Kong permanent identity card, passport, and a return or onward ticket.
