Do Hong Kong passport holders need a visa to visit IE?
Holders of the Hong Kong SAR passport (blue) do NOT need a visa to visit Ireland for tourism. You may enter visa-free and stay up to 90 days. Ireland is not in the Schengen Area, so ETIAS does not apply and there is no Schengen 90/180 limit. A Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport holder can travel to Ireland for tourism or a short visit without obtaining a visa in advance. The Hong Kong Immigration Department's official visa-free access list confirms that the Republic of Ireland grants HKSAR passport holders visa-free entry for up to 90 days, and the Irish immigration authorities treat HKSAR passport holders as non-visa-required nationals. Crucially, Ireland is a member of the EU but is NOT part of the Schengen Area — it maintains its own border controls and the Common Travel Area with the United Kingdom. This means the Schengen 90/180-day rule does not govern stays in Ireland, and the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation (rolling out from late 2026 for Schengen) does NOT apply to travel to Ireland. The permitted length of stay is determined by the Irish immigration officer at the port of entry, normally up to 90 days for visitors. One important caution: this visa-free treatment applies to the HKSAR Passport (blue cover). Holders of the Hong Kong Document of Identity for Visa Purposes or the older Certificate of Identity DO require an Irish visa. Travellers should carry proof of onward/return travel, sufficient funds, and accommodation details, and ensure the passport is valid for the duration of the intended stay.

For guidance only — visa rules change with little notice. Always confirm directly with the destination's embassy or foreign ministry before booking non-refundable travel. Information here applies to ordinary (non-diplomatic) passports unless noted.
