Do Hong Kong passport holders need a visa to visit Canada?
HKSAR passport holders are visa-exempt for Canada but must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before flying. The eTA costs CAD 7, is valid up to 5 years, and allows tourist stays of up to 6 months per entry. Holders of a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) ordinary passport do not need a visitor visa for short tourist trips to Canada. Instead, they are visa-exempt and must hold a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) when arriving by air. The eTA is applied for online, costs CAD 7, and most applications are approved within minutes (occasionally up to 72 hours if extra documents are requested). It is electronically linked to your passport and remains valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, permitting multiple entries. On each entry a border officer normally grants a stay of up to six months. The eTA requirement applies only to air travel — travelers arriving by land or sea (car, bus, train, boat or cruise ship) do not need an eTA, though they still need a valid passport and may be questioned at the border. Always apply through the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca/eTA) and beware of look-alike third-party sites that charge inflated fees.
