Do Hong Kong passport holders need a visa to visit AT?
HK ordinary (HKSAR) passport holders can visit Austria visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period as a Schengen short stay. No visa is needed for tourism. From the planned ETIAS launch (expected late 2026, mandatory from 2027), travelers will need an online ETIAS authorization before departure, but as of 31 May 2026 ETIAS is not yet required. Austria is a member of the Schengen area. Holders of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) ordinary passport enjoy visa-free entry to the entire Schengen zone, including Austria, for short stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period for tourism, family visits or business. This is confirmed by both the Austrian Consulate General in Hong Kong (BMEIA) and the Hong Kong Immigration Department. The passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen area (Austria's consulate states it should be valid 3 months beyond anticipated return to Hong Kong) and generally issued within the last 10 years. The 90/180 rule counts cumulative days across ALL Schengen countries, not Austria alone. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2026, with a transitional/voluntary period and full enforcement expected from 2027. Once mandatory, HKSAR passport holders will remain visa-free but must obtain an approved ETIAS (EUR 7, valid 3 years) online before travel. As of 31 May 2026, ETIAS is NOT yet required for entry.
