🇬🇧UNITED KINGDOM🇵🇹PORTUGAL (SCHENGEN)GB-PT Do United Kingdom passport holders need a visa to visit Portugal (Schengen)?
British citizens can visit Portugal visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism. No visa or pre-authorisation is required as of 30 May 2026. Portugal is part of the Schengen Area, and holders of a full British citizen passport are visa-exempt for short stays. You may enter for tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings, events, or short courses without a visa, staying up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area (not just Portugal). Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before your arrival date and remain valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen Area. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on 10 April 2026: on first entry you register fingerprints and a facial photo at an automated booth, free of charge, with the record valid for three years. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is NOT yet required — it is expected to launch in Q4 2026 with a transition period, after which British travellers will need a EUR 20 online authorisation. At the border you may be asked to show a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds. As of 30 May 2026, no visa and no ETIAS are required.
