United Kingdom to Malawi visa requirements

UK passport holders need a visa for Malawi. The simplest route is an online eVisa (single-entry tourist, US$50) at evisa.gov.mw; the UK is a Category 2 country so visa on arrival is also available, but authorities strongly recommend applying online before travel. As of 30 May 2026, British (UK ordinary) passport holders require a visa to enter Malawi for tourism. Malawi's 2024 visa-waiver scheme that had exempted UK citizens was revoked, with most nationalities again requiring visas from January 2026. The UK is classified as a "Category 2" country under Malawi's current policy (effective 24 February 2026), meaning travellers may obtain a visa on arrival at designated ports of entry, but the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services strongly prefers and recommends that all travellers obtain a visa in advance via the official eVisa portal (evisa.gov.mw). The standard short-stay tourist option is a single-entry visa costing US$50. Multiple-entry options exist (6-month US$150; 12-month US$250). The visa's validity is separate from the length of stay, which is determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry (typically up to 30 days for tourists, extendable). Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival. Because the official portal is the safest, most reliable channel and avoids the risk of arrival delays or refused entry, the eVisa is the recommended verdict for a short tourist visit. Malawi is not in the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 and ETIAS rules do not apply.
