Do United Kingdom passport holders need a visa to visit ME?
UK ordinary passport holders do not need a visa for Montenegro. You can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism. Montenegro is not in the Schengen Area, so there is no ETIAS or eVisa requirement. As of 31 May 2026, British citizens holding an ordinary passport can travel to Montenegro for tourism without a visa and stay for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. Montenegro is a candidate for EU membership but is NOT part of the Schengen Area, so days spent in Montenegro do not count toward your Schengen 90/180 allowance and vice versa; equally, ETIAS (the EU travel authorisation) does NOT apply to Montenegro. No advance application, fee, or online authorisation is required for a short tourist stay. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date. Ensure you receive an entry stamp at the border. A key legal obligation is registration: every visitor must be registered with the local tourist office or police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and most licensed holiday lets do this automatically; if you stay in private/unregistered accommodation you must register yourself, as failure can lead to fines or problems on exit. To stay longer than 90 days or to work/study, you must obtain the appropriate residence permit or visa via the Montenegrin Embassy before or after arrival.
