🇬🇧UNITED KINGDOM🇮🇹ITALY (SCHENGEN)GB-IT Do United Kingdom passport holders need a visa to visit Italy (Schengen)?
UK ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit Italy for tourism. You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. ETIAS is not yet required (launches Q4 2026). As a British citizen with an ordinary passport, you can travel to Italy for tourism, visiting family/friends, or short business without any visa. Italy is in the Schengen area, so the 90-days-in-any-180-day-period rule applies to your combined time across all Schengen countries, not Italy alone. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is operational, so on entry you may register biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) at the border. ETIAS, the new EUR 20 travel authorisation, is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026 and is NOT required as of 30 May 2026 — but you should plan to obtain it once it goes live. At the border you may be asked to show proof of accommodation, a return ticket, travel insurance and sufficient funds.
