The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival in Ecuador. Border officers may ask for proof of onward or return travel and may ask about sufficient funds for the stay. If you want to stay beyond the first 90 days, you can apply (and pay) for a one-time 90-day extension (prorroga) before your initial period expires; overstaying results in a fine on departure and a re-entry block until the fine is paid. Note a special rule for land/river entries from Peru or Colombia: travelers must present a criminal record certificate (covering the last 5 years of residence), legalized with a Hague Apostille and translated into Spanish. Ecuador's 2026 immigration reforms (an online E-Visa platform for residency categories and the revocation of visa-free transit for 45 mostly African countries) do not affect British tourists, who remain in the visa-exempt category.
