Do France passport holders need a visa to visit TJ?
French ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourism in Tajikistan. France is on Tajikistan's unilateral visa-free list (in force since 1 January 2022, expanded 2024), allowing a stay of up to 30 days per entry. As of 31 May 2026, France is one of the 50+ countries covered by Tajikistan's unilateral visa-free regime. A French citizen holding an ordinary passport may enter Tajikistan for tourism and stay up to 30 days without any visa, e-visa or visa-on-arrival. The passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond entry with at least one blank page. On arrival, an immigration officer issues a small white entry/migration slip that must be retained for hotel registration and departure. If the visit exceeds the registration threshold (roughly 10 working days / about 2 weeks) or you stay in non-hotel accommodation, you may need to register with the migration service (OVIR). Travel to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), including most of the Pamir Highway east of Khorog, requires a separate GBAO permit regardless of visa-free status. Travelers who need to stay longer than 30 days, or who prefer documentary backup, can still apply for the official e-visa at evisa.tj (single-entry tourist e-visa, USD 30, up to 45-60 days, to be used within 90 days of issue), but this is optional for short tourist trips. Tajikistan is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply to this route.
