Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit TJ?

German ordinary passport holders can enter Tajikistan visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism. No visa or e-visa is needed for short visits. Register within 10 working days if staying longer than the short window, and obtain a separate GBAO permit for the Pamir region. Since 1 January 2022, Tajikistan has unilaterally exempted German citizens (and most EU/OECD nationals) from visa requirements for stays of up to 30 days. A German ordinary passport holder traveling for tourism therefore does not need a visa or e-visa for a short stay. The passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry, and travelers are typically asked to show a return/onward ticket. One important obligation remains: under Tajik law, registration with the migration service (OVIR) is required, and the German Federal Foreign Office states this must be done within ten working days of arrival (commonly handled by hotels for tourists). A separate, free special permit (GBAO permit) is required to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (the Pamir Highway/Pamir mountains); it can be obtained in-country or alongside an e-visa. If a traveler needs to stay longer than 30 days, the e-visa (single entry, up to 45/60 days) or a regular consular visa via the Tajik embassy in Berlin is the route.
