Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit Portugal (Schengen)?

German citizens travel to Portugal visa-free with full EU freedom of movement — no visa, no ETIAS, just a valid passport or national ID card. Germany and Portugal are both members of the European Union and the Schengen Area. As an EU citizen, a German ordinary passport holder enjoys the right of free movement and may enter, travel, and stay in Portugal for tourism or any short visit without a visa. Entry requires only a valid German passport or national identity card — no border visa, no Schengen short-stay visa, and no ETIAS travel authorisation (ETIAS applies only to visa-exempt non-EU nationals). Because both countries are in Schengen, there are normally no systematic identity checks at internal borders, though carrying a valid travel document remains mandatory and controls can be temporarily reintroduced. There is no fixed limit on the length of a tourist stay for EU citizens; the Schengen 90/180 rule does not restrict EU nationals. For any stay exceeding three months (for example to live, work, or study), an EU citizen must obtain a registration certificate (Certificado de Registo) from the local town hall (Câmara Municipal), but this is not needed for ordinary tourism.
