Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit PL?

No visa. As an EU citizen, a German passport holder enjoys freedom of movement and may enter Poland for tourism or any purpose with only a valid German passport or national ID card, with no time limit on stay. Germany and Poland are both European Union member states and part of the Schengen Area. Under the EU's freedom-of-movement rules, German nationals do not need a visa to enter Poland for tourism, business, study, work, or residence, and there is no fixed cap on the length of stay (the Schengen 90/180 rule applies only to non-EU short-stay visitors, not to EU citizens). Because both countries are in Schengen, there are no routine border checks between them. A valid German passport or national identity card is sufficient to travel. The ETIAS travel authorisation expected to launch in late 2026 and the Entry/Exit System (EES, operational since April 2026) apply only to non-EU/EEA/Swiss travellers; as an EU citizen, a German passport holder is fully exempt from both. The only practical advice is to carry a valid government-issued photo ID (passport or German Personalausweis), as Polish authorities can ask travellers to prove identity and nationality.

How to apply

/01
Confirm your status as an EU citizen
As a German national you hold EU citizenship and the right of free movement across all EU/Schengen states, including Poland. No visa or pre-travel authorisation is needed for any purpose or length of stay.
· Verdict: visa-free
/02
Carry a valid travel document
Bring a valid German passport or German national identity card (Personalausweis). Either is accepted for entry into Poland; Polish authorities may ask you to prove identity and nationality.
· Passport or national ID
/03
Ignore ETIAS and EES for yourself
ETIAS (launching late 2026) and the Entry/Exit System apply only to non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals. As an EU citizen you are exempt and do not register or pay anything.
· EU citizen exempt
/04
Travel directly with no border visa step
Both countries are in the Schengen Area, so there are normally no systematic border checks between Germany and Poland. Spot checks can still occur, so keep your ID accessible.
· Schengen internal border
/05
Register only for long stays
For tourism or short visits nothing is required. If you intend to stay in Poland longer than 3 months, you should register your residence with the local Voivodeship Office, but this is administrative, not a visa.
· Stays over 90 days
