Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit LU?

No visa. German citizens travel to Luxembourg freely under EU freedom of movement, with no time limit on stays and no border controls. A German ordinary passport holder needs no visa to enter Luxembourg. Both Germany and Luxembourg are European Union member states and members of the Schengen Area, so German citizens enjoy full EU freedom of movement (Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, Articles 20-21). There are no border controls at the internal Schengen border between the two countries, and the 90/180-day Schengen short-stay rule does NOT limit EU citizens, only non-EU visa-exempt travelers. A German may enter Luxembourg with either a valid passport or a valid national ID card, stay indefinitely, and work, study or reside without a visa or residence permit (registration with the local commune is required only for stays beyond 90 days). The forthcoming ETIAS travel authorization (expected late 2026) applies only to non-EU visa-exempt nationals and does NOT apply to German or other EU citizens. The only practical requirement is carrying a valid government-issued travel document.
