Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit HU?

No visa. German citizens have full EU freedom of movement and can enter Hungary with just a valid German passport or national ID card, for any length of stay. Germany and Hungary are both EU member states and part of the Schengen Area. As an EU national, a German ordinary-passport holder enjoys full freedom of movement under EU law: no visa, no residence permit, and no time limit on a short visit. Travel is permitted on either a valid German passport or a valid German national identity card; the document only needs to be valid on the day of travel. Because both countries are in Schengen, there are normally no systematic identity checks at the internal border, though Hungary (like any Schengen state) can temporarily reintroduce border controls and police may carry out spot identity checks. The Schengen 90/180 short-stay rule and ETIAS apply only to non-EU visa-exempt travelers; they do NOT apply to EU citizens, so a German national is unaffected by the planned late-2026 ETIAS rollout. There are no entry fees of any kind.
