🇩🇪GERMANY🇫🇷FRANCE (SCHENGEN)DE-FR Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit France (Schengen)?
No visa needed. As an EU citizen, a German passport holder enjoys freedom of movement and can enter France for tourism with just a valid passport or national ID card, with no time limit and no ETIAS required. Germany and France are both members of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Under EU freedom of movement, German nationals have the right to enter, travel, work, study and reside in France without any visa, residence permit or prior authorisation. You may travel using either a valid German passport or a valid German national identity card; the document only needs to be valid on the day of travel (no six-month rule applies). There are no internal Schengen border checks between Germany and France, although on-the-spot police identity checks are possible and member states may temporarily reintroduce border controls. The Schengen 90/180-day short-stay limit and the ETIAS travel authorisation apply ONLY to non-EU visa-exempt travellers — as an EU citizen you are exempt from both and may stay indefinitely. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES), operational from 10 April 2026, also does not apply to EU citizens. Tourism in France therefore requires no fee, no application and no processing time for a German passport holder.
