🇩🇪GERMANY🇪🇸SPAIN (SCHENGEN)DE-ES Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit Spain (Schengen)?
No visa needed. German citizens have EU freedom of movement and can enter Spain with just a valid passport or national ID card, for any length of stay. Germany and Spain are both members of the European Union and the Schengen Area. As an EU citizen exercising freedom of movement, a German ordinary passport holder does not need a visa, an ETIAS authorization, or any prior permission to travel to Spain for tourism. Entry is permitted with either a valid German passport or a valid German national identity card, which must be valid on the day of travel. There is no 90/180-day limit for EU citizens: the Schengen short-stay rule applies only to non-EU nationals. Internal Schengen borders normally have no systematic checks, though spot identity checks are possible, so travelers should carry their ID document at all times. ETIAS, launching in late 2026, applies only to visa-exempt non-EU nationals and does not affect German citizens. Germans staying longer than three months for work, study, or residence must register with local authorities, but this is not a visa requirement.

For guidance only — visa rules change with little notice. Always confirm directly with the destination's embassy or foreign ministry before booking non-refundable travel. Information here applies to ordinary (non-diplomatic) passports unless noted.
