Do China passport holders need a visa to visit Hong Kong?

Mainland residents need the EEP (往来港澳通行证) plus an exit endorsement. CNY 15-30, up to 7 days per visit. Mainland Chinese residents cannot enter Hong Kong on the regular Chinese passport. They must hold a Mainland-issued Exit-Entry Permit for Travel to and from Hong Kong and Macao (往来港澳通行证, EEP / 'Two-way Permit') plus a valid exit endorsement (签注) for the specific purpose of travel. The most common is the Individual Visit (G) endorsement available to Guangdong residents and 38 designated mainland cities, allowing a 7-day stay per entry. Team-tour (L) endorsements are equally usable for self-travel since 2017. Multiple-entry ('一签多行') was restored for Shenzhen permanent residents and Shenzhen residence-permit holders on 1 December 2024.

/06 — The risks

Common refusal reasons

by frequency
/01
Missing or expired endorsement
The EEP alone is not enough — every trip needs a current endorsement matching the trip purpose. Most refusals at Luohu or West Kowloon are for expired endorsements.
High
/02
Wrong endorsement type
Using a G endorsement for paid work, or an L endorsement for an extended stay, can lead to refusal. Apply for the appropriate visa for non-tourism purposes.
Medium
/03
Overstay beyond 7 days
Hong Kong enforces the 7-day cap strictly. Overstays lead to fines, deportation, and future endorsement refusals.
Low
/04
Not eligible for individual visit
Residents outside the 38 IVS cities and Guangdong cannot apply for G — they must use L (team tour) or another category. L endorsements work fine for self-travel since 2017.
Medium
/05
Working illegally
EEP holders cannot work in HK on visitor endorsements. For employment, apply for a work visa at the HK Immigration Department.
Low
