China to Hong Kong (SAR China) visa requirements

Mainland residents generally need an EEP (往来港澳通行证) plus an appropriate Hong Kong endorsement. A PRC ordinary passport is only usable for qualifying transit through Hong Kong to or from another country/territory. Mainland Chinese residents are not ordinary-passport visa-free visitors to Hong Kong. For short private visits from the Mainland, the normal route is a Mainland-issued Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP / 往来港澳通行证) plus a valid Hong Kong exit endorsement matching the trip purpose. Individual Visit Scheme (G) tourism endorsements are available to eligible household-registration residents, and qualifying non-household-registration residents, in the 59 Mainland cities listed by the Hong Kong Tourism Commission and NIA; other purposes use endorsements such as group tour (L), business (S), visiting relatives (T), talent (R), other (Q), or stay (D). Stay length depends on the endorsement: G and L tourism endorsements are normally up to 7 days per Hong Kong visit, business endorsements are up to 14 days, talent endorsements up to 30 days, and visiting-relative or stay endorsements can have different limits. PRC passport holders transiting Hong Kong to and from another country or territory may be granted 7 days on each landing without a prior entry permit if they meet normal immigration requirements, including valid entry facilities for the destination and confirmed onward booking for the overseas journey.

How to apply

/01
Use the right travel document
For visits from the Mainland, apply for and travel with the EEP plus the Hong Kong endorsement that matches the purpose of travel. Do not rely on an ordinary PRC passport for tourism or other non-transit visits.
· EEP + endorsement
/02
Pick the matching endorsement
Tourism is usually G (Individual Visit Scheme) where eligible or L (group tour). Business, visiting relatives, talent exchanges, other private matters, study, work, residence, and dependants use different endorsement or entry-permit routes.
· G / L / S / T / R / Q / D
/03
Check Individual Visit Scheme eligibility

/05
Observe the endorsement stay limit

/06
Use a PRC passport only for qualifying transit
A PRC passport can be used for transit through Hong Kong to and from another country or territory for up to 7 days if normal immigration requirements, destination entry facilities, and confirmed onward booking are met.

/06 — The risks

Common refusal reasons

by frequency
/01
Trying to use an ordinary PRC passport for tourism
Hong Kong's transit concession for PRC passports is not a general tourism visa waiver. Mainland residents visiting from the Mainland normally need the EEP and endorsement.
High
/02
Missing, expired, or wrong endorsement
The EEP alone is not enough. The endorsement must be valid, unused or within its permitted entries, and appropriate for the purpose of travel.
High
/03
Overstaying the endorsement limit
Tourism endorsements normally allow up to 7 days per Hong Kong visit; other categories have their own limits. Overstaying can affect future travel.
Medium
/04
Individual Visit Scheme ineligibility
Only eligible residents in the listed 59 cities, or qualifying non-household-registration residents under NIA conditions, can apply for the G individual-visit endorsement.
Medium
/05
Visitor status used for work or study
Visitor endorsements do not authorize paid work, long-term study, residence, or training beyond the permitted route; use the proper Hong Kong entry permit and Mainland endorsement.
