Do China passport holders need a visa to visit Finland?
Chinese ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Finland for tourism. There is no visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival, or eVisa option. ETIAS does not apply to Chinese nationals — they must obtain a full Schengen visa. Finland is a member of the Schengen Area, and Chinese ordinary passport holders are not on the EU visa-exemption list. To visit Finland for tourism, a Chinese citizen must apply in advance for a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C / Category C), which permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. Applications are submitted to the Embassy of Finland in Beijing via the VFS Global Finland Visa Application Centre (located in Beijing and several other Chinese cities). Required documents include a valid passport, completed application form, recent photo, travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 coverage, proof of accommodation and return travel, and evidence of sufficient funds (minimum about EUR 50/day). Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are collected in person. The standard adult visa fee is EUR 90 plus an approximately EUR 20 VFS service fee, and standard processing is 15 calendar days (apply up to 6 months before travel, recommended at least 1 month ahead). Note that ETIAS — Europe's upcoming travel authorisation expected to launch in late 2026 — does NOT apply to Chinese nationals; ETIAS is only for visa-exempt nationalities, so Chinese travelers continue to use the standard Schengen visa process.
