Do China passport holders need a visa to visit EE?
Chinese ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Estonia for tourism. There is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option, and ETIAS does not apply to Chinese nationals. Estonia is a full member of the Schengen Area, and China is not on the EU's visa-exempt list. A Chinese ordinary passport holder must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa (Category C) before traveling for tourism. Applications are submitted in person through VFS Global centers in China on behalf of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and biometrics (10 fingerprints and a photo) are collected unless taken within the previous 59 months. The visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area; it may be issued as single or multiple entry with validity up to five years for frequent travelers. The standard fee is EUR 90 plus a VFS service fee, and decisions normally take about 15 calendar days (up to 45 in complex cases). The new ETIAS travel authorization, expected in late 2026, applies only to visa-exempt nationalities and does NOT replace the visa requirement for Chinese citizens. Estonia is a relatively favorable Schengen destination for Chinese applicants, with high approval rates, but a complete document file (insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, accommodation, itinerary, and proof of funds) is essential.
