Canada to Bulgaria visa requirements

Canadian passport holders do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria for tourism. Bulgaria is a full Schengen member (since 1 January 2025), so Canadians may enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS is not yet required as of May 2026. Canada and the EU have a mutual visa-waiver for short stays, and Bulgaria became a full member of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025 (air and sea border checks were lifted on 31 March 2024, land border checks on 1 January 2025). As a result, a Canadian ordinary passport holder can travel to Bulgaria for tourism or a short visit without any visa. The stay is governed by the Schengen short-stay rule: a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, counted cumulatively across all Schengen countries (not just Bulgaria). No advance authorization is required at present. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will eventually apply to Canadian travelers, but as of 30 May 2026 it is not yet operational; the EU has not confirmed a firm start date and expects launch in the last quarter of 2026. When live, ETIAS will be a 7 EUR travel authorization (free for under-18s and over-70s) valid up to 3 years, not a visa. Travelers should carry a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen Area and be prepared to show proof of funds, accommodation, and onward/return travel at the border.
