Do Brazil passport holders need a visa to visit Canada?
Brazil is a visa-required country for Canada, but Brazilians who fly and hold either a Canadian visa issued in the last 10 years or a valid US nonimmigrant visa can travel on a CAD 7 electronic travel authorization (eTA) instead of a visitor visa. Everyone else, and anyone arriving by land or sea, needs a visitor visa (TRV). Canada does not grant Brazilian ordinary passport holders visa-free entry. Since 1 May 2017, IRCC operates a partial eTA scheme: a Brazilian citizen flying to (or transiting through) a Canadian airport may apply for an eTA — instead of a visitor visa — only if they have held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years OR currently hold a valid United States nonimmigrant visa. The eTA costs CAD 7, is approved within minutes in most cases, is electronically linked to the passport, and is valid for up to 5 years (or until the passport expires). It permits short visits, business or tourist activity for stays normally up to 6 months. The eTA covers air travel only — Brazilians driving from the US or arriving by bus, train, boat or cruise ship always need a visitor visa, regardless of any US visa. Brazilians who do not meet the eTA conditions must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (visitor visa): CAD 100 government fee plus CAD 85 biometrics, with biometrics collected at a Visa Application Centre (Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo) and processing typically a few weeks. An already-valid Canadian visa can keep being used until it expires. For this guide we mark the route as eTA because that is the documented electronic authorization for eligible air travelers; travelers who do not qualify should follow the visitor-visa pathway described below.
