Austria to Spain visa requirements

No visa required. Austria and Spain are both EU member states and part of the Schengen Area, so Austrian citizens enjoy full EU freedom of movement and can enter Spain with just a valid passport or national ID card. An Austrian ordinary passport holder needs no visa to visit Spain for tourism. Both countries are members of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Under EU free-movement rules (Directive 2004/38/EC), Austrian nationals have the right to enter, stay, and move freely in Spain using either a valid passport or a valid national identity card. There are no internal Schengen border checks under normal conditions, though member states may reintroduce temporary controls in exceptional circumstances, in which case a valid ID document must be shown. Importantly, the Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule does NOT apply to EU citizens: as an EU national, the Austrian traveler is not subject to that third-country limit and may stay beyond 90 days (registering residence with local Spanish authorities if staying longer than three months). The new ETIAS travel authorisation, expected to start in the last quarter of 2026, applies only to visa-exempt non-EU/third-country nationals and does NOT apply to Austrian or other EU citizens. No fee, no application, and no advance authorisation is required.
