Austria to Bhutan visa requirements

Austrian ordinary passport holders need an e-visa to visit Bhutan. Apply online before travel, pay a one-off US$40 visa fee plus the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per night. There is no visa-on-arrival for Austrians and no visa-free entry. Bhutan requires Austrian citizens (like nearly all foreigners, except India, Bangladesh and Maldives) to obtain a visa before arrival. Since the September 2022 reopening reforms, the system is a fully online e-visa/e-permit: travelers apply directly on the official portal (immi.gov.bt) or via a licensed Bhutanese tour operator/registered hotel. Approval is granted as an electronic visa clearance letter that must be shown on arrival; the physical visa is then stamped in Paro. The cost has two components: a non-refundable US$40 visa application fee and the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per adult per night for the entire stay. Applications are reviewed within about five working days. The e-visa is typically single entry and valid for stays up to 90 days. Required documents include a passport valid at least six months beyond the intended departure date, a digital passport photo, and valid travel insurance. Children aged 6-12 pay a reduced SDF of US$50/night; under 6 are exempt. Austria is in the Schengen Area, but that has no bearing on entry to Bhutan, which is not a Schengen state and applies its own visa regime.
