Austria to Bulgaria visa requirements

No visa. Austrian citizens travel to Bulgaria visa-free under EU freedom of movement, carrying a valid passport or national ID card. Both Austria and Bulgaria are member states of the European Union, and Bulgaria became a full member of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025 (after lifting land border controls; air and sea borders had opened in March 2024). As an EU/EEA citizen, an Austrian ordinary passport holder enjoys the right of free movement and needs no visa for tourism or any other short stay in Bulgaria. Travel is permitted on either a valid Austrian passport or a valid Austrian national ID card; a driving licence is not an accepted travel document. Because both countries are now inside Schengen with no internal land border checks, there is no entry stamp and the 90/180-day short-stay rule that applies to non-EU nationals does NOT apply to EU citizens - an Austrian may stay indefinitely, though for residence beyond 3 months a simple registration with local authorities is required. ETIAS is not relevant to EU citizens; it will apply only to visa-exempt non-EU nationals. Identity checks may still occur at internal borders for public order or security reasons, so carrying a valid document at all times is mandatory.
