Argentina to Uruguay visa requirements

No visa needed. Argentine citizens travel to Uruguay visa-free under the Mercosur freedom-of-movement agreement and may enter with just a valid Argentine DNI (national ID card) or passport. Argentina and Uruguay are both full members of Mercosur, whose freedom-of-movement and residence agreement lets Argentine ordinary-passport holders enter Uruguay for tourism without any visa. For short tourist visits Argentines are admitted for up to 90 days (extendable a further 90 at the Dirección Nacional de Migración). A key Mercosur convenience is that travelers do not even need a passport: a valid, in-good-condition Argentine DNI (national identity card) is accepted at all official crossings — ferries (Buquebus, Colonia Express), the international bridges over the Uruguay River, and flights into Carrasco/Montevideo. Important caveat: the DNI must show nationality "Argentino"; a DNI marked "Extranjero" (foreign permanent resident) is NOT valid for Mercosur travel and such travelers must use their own national passport instead. There is no tourist visa fee, no eVisa, no ETA and no visa-on-arrival process — entry is granted by the immigration officer on arrival. No mandatory vaccinations apply for travel from Argentina; travel insurance is recommended but not required. This route is one of the most open border relationships in the world and has been stable through 2024–2026 with no new electronic-authorization requirements announced.
